Quito

Quito, Ecuador is the higest official capital city in the world at 2,850m. The flight in from Colombia brought us over some awesome mountains and we landed on a runway enclosed by ravines.

We arrived on Saturday evening and took a quick stroll around the historical centre. There are lots of gorgeous buildings but not many bars or restaurants in the centre of town.

The hostel was in La Mariscal which is a more social area so we went back there for an Ecuadorian dinner in Achiote. I had fried banana, potato cakes and grilled veg – very yum.

Sunday morning we got up early and went up the cable car to get some pretty amazing views of the city and the surrounding mountains. You can hike up to the adjacent volcano but as we were tight for time we had to make do with taking in the scenery from 4,100m.

It’s been a fleeting visit but I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen of Quito – the people are friendly, the infrastructure is good and the food is delicious!
